Magnitude 5.6 earthquake strikes Indonesia's Sumatra island


An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6 hit the Indonesian island of Sumatra on Saturday, the Indonesia Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency said.


The agency said, according to the Indonesian news agency "Antara", that the earthquake occurred at 9:41 am local time today, and its epicenter was 75 kilometers northwest of Nias Utara District in North Sumatra Province, at a depth of 10 kilometers.


No tsunami warning was issued after the earthquake, and there were no immediate reports of human or material losses.


The Indonesian Meteorological Agency had reported earlier today that an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 occurred off the island of Sulawesi this morning as well, and there were no immediate reports of injuries or material damage.
