British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and German Chancellor Angela Merkel held a meeting Friday, where they discussed travel restrictions imposed to combat the Corona pandemic, as well as the increase in cases of the mutated strain Delta in Britain, according to media outlets quoting Reuters.
The meeting, which took place at Johnson's country residence and came during Merkel's last visit to Britain while in office, aims to deepen bilateral ties.
But Johnson is also seeking to show that Britain's advanced vaccination program should allow all Britons to travel abroad more widely this year, something the hard-hit travel sector says it needs to survive more than a year of restrictions.
But despite the fact that Britain eased the quarantine conditions for those who received the full vaccination dose upon returning from holidays, some European countries, including Germany, apply a quarantine period to arrivals from Britain, regardless of whether they received the vaccine or not.
Merkel's visit to London is an opportunity to strengthen diplomatic relations with her country's second largest strategic trading partner after years of dispute over Britain's exit from the European Union.
Johnson's office said Merkel would be the first foreign leader to address the British government since former US President Bill Clinton did so in 1997 at the invitation of then British Prime Minister Tony Blair.
