Palestinian Prime Minister Muhammad Shtayyeh discussed today, Sunday, in his office in Ramallah, with the new European envoy for the Middle East peace process, Sven Copmans, the latest developments in the file for the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, and the launch of a serious political path to revive the political process.
The Prime Minister stressed the importance of filling the political vacuum, through the crystallization of Europe’s initiative to revive the political process, and the participation of the international Quartet parties in it, with the aim of finding a just and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian issue, and embodying the establishment of the Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with Jerusalem as its capital.
Shtayyeh indicated that a technical team has been formed to work on the reconstruction file, stressing the importance of having international guarantees not to repeat the Israeli aggression and destroy what was rebuilt.
The Prime Minister reaffirmed the Palestinian leadership’s insistence, headed by President Mahmoud Abbas, to hold elections, calling on the international community, especially European countries, to seriously pressure Israel to allow it to be held in Jerusalem as candidates, elections and propaganda, with the aim of restoring the democratic glow and for it to be a gateway to end the division and embody national unity.
Shtayyeh said: "The whole world, especially Europe, must take a firm and serious stance towards the Israeli occupation, to stop settlement expansion and occupation violations against our people, seize lands, displace Palestinians from their homes, especially in Jerusalem, and make Israel pay the price for its occupation of Palestinian land."
