US court documents showed that Derek Chauvin, a former Minneapolis police officer, had asked a city judge for a new trial, according to Russia Today.
Chauvin's request comes two weeks after he was found guilty of three counts of murder in the killing of George Floyd, an American citizen of African descent.
Chauvin's conviction marked a milestone in US history with regard to race, and a denunciation of the way law enforcement agencies treated black citizens.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, welcomed the verdict of conviction issued in the case of the murder of Floyd, saying that "any other outcome would have represented a mockery of justice."
