The Independent newspaper said that the Indian strain of Corona virus puts the easing of the closure in Britain in doubt in light of the possibility of re-imposing domestic restrictions to limit the spread of the virus.
Scientists in Britain called for increased vaccinations in areas of England that witnessed a rise in infections related to the strain that was first detected in India. The latest figures indicate that the number of infections caused by the strain, which is feared to be spreading at the societal level in some parts of England, has nearly tripled over the past week. Another response being considered is bringing forward the date of a second dose of the vaccine to eligible groups in order to increase protection.
It is expected that the Scientific Emergency Committee in Britain will discuss the spread of the Indian variant in light of fears that it may disrupt Britain's map to get out of the lockdown, while Downing Street said that the idea of increasing vaccinations is being considered.
British Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the situation was being watched carefully, and the government would not hesitate to take further measures if needed. Prime Minister Boris Johnson did not rule out imposing isolation in some regions to contain the spread of the Indian variable, and said that he is cautiously optimistic about the implementation of the roadmap to exit from the closure as planned, if the Indian variable did not spread in a way that some people fear.
The infection rate jumped from 520 to 1,1313 per week, according to public health authorities in England, who said they are closely monitoring the impact and severity of this variable.
Data taken from the Covid 19 Genome Federation database in Britain reveals that of all the Corona virus genomes detected in the past 28 days, more than 8% are associated with the worrisome Indian variant.
