Study: Sugar-Free Energy Drinks Cause Alzheimer's and Heart Disease

A study issued by Curtin University in Australia found the harms of consuming energy drinks even if they were devoid of sugars, warning against long-term consumption, according to what was reported on the Medical Express website.

The researchers pointed out that the study was carried out on models of mice, to identify the effects of energy drinks that contain large amounts of caffeine and sugar and are increasingly consumed, especially by young people, on health over the long term, as many may think that sugar-free varieties are healthier. For them and do not pose a danger.

The researchers explained that energy drinks affect the brain, because they disrupt blood vessels and increase inflammation in the brains of mouse models, which is dangerous because blood vessel damage in the brain and increased inflammation are early features of many neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease and multiple sclerosis.

The study also found that consuming energy drinks leads to chronic diseases such as heart disease and stroke, known as metabolic syndrome, as it has been shown that the sugar-free energy drink also promotes metabolic syndrome and increases blood glucose and cholesterol in mouse models, with levels of Similar to other energy drinks.

The study showed that long-term consumption of energy drinks, whether sugar-free or not, leads to an increase in blood glucose and harmful fats (triglycerides), which is a common feature of diabetes, and it also increases body fat without any change in weight.

The researchers recommended that consumers be warned against consuming energy drinks that will harm their health in the long run.
